Berichte vom 21.5.07

Dear Friends,
Mahmoud one of our field workers managed to make a short contact with us, he confirmed the sad reality that the fighting is expanding to reach every corner inside the camp. Two clinics were directly hit and most of the rest clinics are very close to the front lines, the mosque is being used now to shelter some of the wounded, but even first aide material is becoming rare, no one was expecting any kind of fighting and no one was prepared. NGOs are calling for doctors, nurses and experienced people to volunteer and pleading for people who have any kind of first aide material to give as the need is rising even for the simplest items, not to mention other equipment, medication or blood transfusion that are out of question. The most horrible thing they are facing is the snipers, those who risk giving a hand for the wounded are also being targeted. Mahmoud was interviewed on the phone by the BBC, Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya TV stations and talked about their drastic situation pleading for help. How about you? I worriedly asked Mahmoud, he told me softly that his own house was hit; his family is staying with some relatives…Take care was the only thing I could offer for a person dealing with something horrible called death….
We are also trapped in the outside helpless and shamelessly unable to do anything.

We were able to call Asaad the computer teacher in Naher El-Bared, he asked me to reveal the real picture to the outside world about their drastic situation. No one knows the real number of civilian casualties whether those killed or injured, since they can hardly move from one area to another. Assad continued saying:
Situation inside the camp is getting worse, no place is safe, frightened helpless people are over crowded inside few shelters that are not prepared or equipped to receive people. The fighting is targeting every place in the depth of the camp and snipers are targeting every moving shadow. The Red Cross managed last night to evacuate about 30 injured people. The only safe clinic inside the camp received today 40 injured children, the number of those killed is rising and some are still in the streets with no way to pull their bodies. The need for water and bread is becoming intense with children crying inside the shelters asking for food and water.
As Asaad was talking I heard the noise of heavy bombardment, he excused me and hurried to the shelter.  Again we witness how civilians are being trapped, used as human shields and paying the price in blood for a conflict that they are not part of.
Dear Friends,
With great sorry and bitter sad feelings we convey to you the real picture of Naher El-Bared Camp. Severe fighting is still taking place with causalities mainly among innocent civilians who are trapped inside their houses, with no way to the outside. No organization is able to enter the camp till now to answer the needs of the people. Thank God there were no casualties among our children, families or staff, but unfortunately our center was hit, the main gate and the entrance were destroyed and one civilian passerby was killed. The need is great for drinking water which is usually pumped to the houses by electric motors, now with no electricity inside the camp; the people are left with no water. Luckily injured persons were evacuated last night to the nearby hospitals since there are no hospitals inside the camp. We will keep you informed re any developments.
Best regards

Dear friends,
Nothing clear yet contacts with Naher El-Bared are becoming very difficult. For the second time our center was hit and the last floor was targeted this time, of course we cannot know the dimension of the destruction, but we are grateful that no one was inside. Fadi the music trainer managed to call this morning and informed us that the bombardment is intensifying and the whole camp is under tight siege, while humanitarian organizations like PRCS, UNRWA, the Red Cross and others are waiting outside for a permission to enter with the relief material and food for the trapped people who are in great need for water, bread and milk for the children.
We need from our partners and friends who know and visited and took photos of Naher El-Bared and had various experiences with our children, families and staff in that camp to write to their media about the real, simple and peaceful people of Naher El-Bared, almost everyone of you knows somebody in flesh and blood from Naher El-Bared. We need our friends at JCCP who helped us in building the center of Naher El-Bared to say something about that experience and how the center was once a home for orphaned children and is now serving the local community mainly children and youth. What is needed is not to label the whole 40,000 population of a camp as being terrorists, we need together to work on eliminating poverty, bringing justice and providing opportunities for the youth to be productive and build a future that they will certainly struggle to protect and prevent any one from manipulating and misusing their difficult situation. We need a fair analysis for the situation and not only the media search for exciting stories that can sell and miss- judge at the same time.
Thank you all for the emails of solidarity that reflects sincere feelings.
Dear friends,
Meetings with NGOs and PRCS is continuous to prepare the grounds to receive the survivals from Naher El-Bared once a seize fire agreement is reached. It is expected that families would leave  El-Bared in large numbers and the first station would be Beddawi camp. BAS is cooperating with other NGOs and a committee was organized to make preparations to receive those people. Our center in Beddawi will be ready to shelter a number of families; UNRWA is expected to take the greatest responsibility in securing food and relief material for the people.
Inside El-Bared there are four doctors working with few nurses to serve the injured people with the minimum supplies they have and of course no surgeries can be done. PRCS with the help of the Red Cross was able to evacuate last night a number of 17 wounded people 11 of them were received in Beddawi hospital and 6 admitted to private hospitals in the region. Three children one of them 3 years old managed to escape from inside Naher El-Bared without their parents, they were taken to Beddawi for care and shelter.
Will keep you posted.
