A protest against cancelling the invitation of Felicia Langer
We, the undersigned, protest against the cancellation of the original invitation of the well-known Israeli Human Rights lawyer Felicia Langer from a panel debate in the framework of the Else Lasker-Schueler-Forum, to be held on 29th October 2006 in Zurich/Switzerland. The subject of the panel: “Die ewige Lust an den Taetern” (“The eternal longing for the perpetrators”). We protest againstLanger being substituted by the highly influential Jewish-German publicist Henryk Modest Broder, known for his incitements against peace activists, Arabs, and Muslims in general.
The Jewish poetess Else.Lasker-Schueler was – like her friend, the philosopher Martin Buber – an advocate of reconciliation between Jews and Arabs. Broder, however, advocates exactly the opposite: the very thought about reconciliation and mutual understanding between the cultures is alien to him, given his habit of attacking and defaming in vulgar terms Arab and Muslim as well as peace activists, as is easily traceable going to his website (http://www.henryk-broder.de or http://www.achgut.de). Some in the German media view him as a cue-giver for right-wing radicals, considering his excursions against Islam.
These are reasons enough to consider Broder as completely unacceptable at a memorial celebration in honour of a poet committed to peace
Given her commitment to reconciliation and mutual understanding, Alternative Nobel Prize-winner Felicia Langer is to be considered much more akin in spirit to the deceased poet than Henryk Broder.
In view of the fact of an offer by Evelyn Hecht- Galinski and her husband to fund the presence of Langer Felicia Langer, the alleged reason of financial constraints, which was given by Hajo Jahn, chairman of the Else Lasker-Schueler and organiser of the event, is highly dubious and we suspect, with good reason, that her substitution by Broder has little to do with finances.
With the first voices of protest coming forward, Jahn defended Broder’s participation quoting Rosa Luxemburg’s famous saying: “Freedom is always and exclusively freedom for the one who thinks differently.” We, on our part, do not believe that in this case Broder’s freedom to voice his opinions is at stake. As one of “the best-known Jewish writers in the German speaking region” (Jahn), Henryk M. Border enjoys sufficient space in the media to spread his thoughts widely.
We cannot but underscore that this very “freedom for the one who thinks differently” is being increasingly denied to Felicia Langer and to many other advocates of peace in the Middle East. Right now, the memorial celebration in honour of a woman committed to peace is about to be offered to Broder as a forum for the display of his cynical “longing for the perpetrators”.
“It’s true, Israel today is more of a perpetrator than a victim. But that’s positive and correct, after the Jews had tried for 2000 years to get by playing the part of the eternal victim andhaving only negative experiences. Perpetrators usually have a longer life-expectancy than victims and it’s also more fun being a perpetrator than a victim.” (Henryk M. Broder, Juedische Allgemeine, 17.3.2005).
Even the subject of the panel debate seems to be tailored to Broder’s line of argument. Originally, the debate was to be about dealing with exiles in the past and in the present and not about the eternal pleasure of the perpetrators. It seems obvious that inviting Broder while cancelling Langer’s invitation has more to do with political demands of one or more organizations of supporters. By any account, the entire affair has neither anything to do with freedom of opinion nor with Else Lasker-Schueler.
In accordance with Else Lasker-Schueler’s spiritual inheritance we demand that Felicia Langer’s invitation to the event be reinstated and that Henryk M. Broder’s be cancelled.
We call on people committed to peace, especially on intellectuals, artists and writers to sign the following protest and to disseminate it widely.
We are asking for your signature, with full name, profession/organization, address and comments to be forwarded to art@arendt-erhard.de. or to else_lasker_petition@walla.com

I was dumbfounded when I heard that Felicia Langer, a long-time activist for a just peace in my homeland, Palestine/Israel, and a lawyer for human rights, will not be invited to a forum to be held in Zurich on 29 October 2006. I have known Felicia Langer for a long time. If there is any person deserving to be invited at Else-Lasker-Schueler Forum, one of the first persons that should be invited is none other than Felicia. She has much to say and contribute to a better understanding of the situation in my homeland and has done much for creating good-will among Palestinians towards Jews, who through her become aware that not all Jews are enemies or oppressors. I call on you not to bow to Zionist pressures emanating from racist persons such as Mr. Broder, who has for years contributed to discredit Jews by his racist writings. |

I do wish to sign the petition against the suppression of the legitimate and critical perspective to have been offered by Felicia Langer. Those who extol the virtues of the State in the manner of Hegel only prepare the path for the worst imaginable. Let those who no longer exist and who beget no others to carry their name be a reminder of what Else Lasker-Schueler-Forum, is touching. |

Even though I oppose, of course, the replacement, how can you write: The Jewish poetess Else.Lasker-Schueler was – like her friend, the philosopher Martin Buber – an advocate of *reconciliation* between Jews and Arabs. It is well-known that Buber supported the colonization of European Jews of Palestine, which was done by force of Turkish and British occupation, and against the express wish of the native population? If he had later talked of 'reconciliation', that is either hypocricy or selective amnesia.

I also do truly believe that Henryk M. Broder is not an acceptable substitute for Mrs. Langer, especially not, when considering the given occasion. Living and working in Israel for a peace organisation, I do follow the European and especially the German media quite well, and I do know Mr. Broder especially for his insults and ruthless attacks on everybody that dares to either have a different opinion or who is active in peace and reconciliation efforts. I therefore do not think, Mr. Broder should step in the place of Mrs. Langer. |
